Deep Dive: Defining Rights & Royalties

In the context of the open metaverse Lamina1 is building, creator rights and royalties refer to the fundamental principles and compensation mechanisms that ensure fair treatment and direct payments for creators contributing to the ecosystem.

Lamina1 is built on a creator-first vision, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and rewarding the creative contributions of all individuals in the open metaverse, and ensuring their privacy and prosperity as they move through virtual worlds.

In the Creator Studio, creators can upload their Items and mint them on-chain, leveraging our V1 Rights Framework, which allows them to define ownership parameters, control attribution, specify commercial usage, and manage interactions with artificial intelligence (AI) in relation to the creators' work.

See the table below for definitions of what each term used on the Hub to describe Creator Rights mean, and the accompanying icon that will display with your Item if you select them when creating an Item on the Lamina1 Hub:

Following the Creator Rights page, we also have a page that will allow you to set co-creators you'd like to attribute with your item, and potentially allocate Royalties to once item sales, Storefronts and transfers become available on the Lamina1 Hub. When this happens, we will expand this part of the flow to include a more built-out UI that will allow you to set things like Splits and Resale Royalties for each item and co-creator.

Right now, rights are stored in the content’s metadata when you create an Item on the Lamina1 Hub. This means they are not yet enforceable. Your preferences are simply recorded for posterity as we work toward on-chain and multi-chain enforcement in the future.

We also know that rights and royalties work very differently depending on the type of content and creator (e.g. film and music use-cases) and are exploring a number of expansions to the current system you see today, including customizable rights packages and/or the ability to upload any kind of smart contract or legal agreement into the Item creation flow to be minted alongside their work.

Additional things we’re considering including in future updates to this part of the creation flow include:

  • Derivatives/Pass-Through Rights
  • More Flexibility Around Transfer Fees, Royalties, and Co-Collaboration
  • Requirements for AI-Disclosure
  • & more
